The Context Before 1841
The Comoros archipelago, including Mayotte, was made up of small sultanates (kingdoms) that were often in conflict with each other.
In the early 1800s, Mayotte was ruled by Sultan Andriantsoly (also spelled Andrian Tsouli), a Malagasy prince who had fled from Madagascar after being overthrown.
He became Sultan of Mayotte but faced challenges from other local leaders and lacked support.
