The Context Before 1841

  • The Comoros archipelago, including Mayotte, was made up of small sultanates (kingdoms) that were often in conflict with each other.

  • In the early 1800s, Mayotte was ruled by Sultan Andriantsoly (also spelled Andrian Tsouli), a Malagasy prince who had fled from Madagascar after being overthrown.

  • He became Sultan of Mayotte but faced challenges from other local leaders and lacked support.
